All of us have experienced the dread or panic of realizing than we’ve made a serious mistake, or feared that we’re going to make a fool of ourselves. Of course, staying calm is considered the secret to best handling challenging situations. But new research, out of Harvard Business School, indicates that we may be approaching things the wrong way. Welcoming a crisis or challenge, just like we relish playing a game or participating in any other situation that feels within our capabilities, is actually how to perform best.
“People have a very strong intuition that trying to calm down is the best way to cope with their anxiety, but that can be very difficult and ineffective. When people feel anxious and try to calm down, they are thinking about all the things that could go badly. When they are excited, they are thinking about how things could go well.” Allison Wood Brooks
